Holbox

Holbox, north of the Yucatán Peninsula, is a long, narrow island of about 40 km of beaches, sandy streets and golf carts instead of cars — a fishing village that keeps its calm.

To get there you take a 25-minute ferry from Chiquilá, crossing the Yalahau lagoon, home of Isla de Pájaros and its flamingos, and Isla Pasión with its sandbars.

Holbox is famous for swimming with whale sharks (June to mid-September), for bioluminescence at night, and for beaches that get wilder toward Punta Mosquito and Punta Cocos.
