Just
five miles long and half a mile wide, Isla Mujeres part of Mexico's sun-drenched
tropical Caribbean, is located on the north-eastern curve of the Yucatan
Peninsula.
Discovered by spanish navigators in the 15th century, Isla Mujeres was
completely uninhabited except for numerous Mayan statuettes, all
depicting women, found all over the insland-hence it's name "Isla
Mujeres".
Since the Isla
Mujeres has been a base for pirates, sailors, merchants and fisherman
alike. Surrounded by a spectacular cristaline turquoise sea, abounding
with sub-aquatic fauna y flora, Isla Mujeres natural beauty has been
an attraction for travelers and adventures for decades.
In the late sixties Isla Mujeres received world wide recognition
through the escapades and incredible under-water photography of Ramon
Bravo and Jacques Cousteau. One of their remarkable discoveries was
the existence of sleeping sharks in sub-aquatic caves which still
attract people from all over the world to this day.
Modern day Isla Mujeres is as authentic and enchanting as ever. It's
natural beauty, excellent climate and friendly inhabitants are still
it's main attractions. Add a myriad of water-sports, gourmet restaurants,
up-to-date communications, arts'n crafts ATM's, excursions to
surrounding Mundo Maya archaeological zones or very cosmopolitan Cancun,
and... you're in paradise.
