I, like many others on this site, had been slightly worried beforehand after reading some of the negative reviews on this site, however I would advise anyone who is going to go and make up their own mind, which is what i did. The hotel is an an idyllic location, right on a lovely beach, overlooking the gorgeous blue green ocean. I have not been to the Caribbean before, so can only really compare it to Spain and Greece, but its miles ahead in most respects. Our room was lovely, and cleaned spotless every single day we were there. We never had to wait for sunbeds, to eat or for any service. Id say that the hotel when i went was about 90% British, with a few Americans, Mexicans, Italians etc. I heard that most of the other hotels were predominantly American, so if your wanting to stay with the Brits, id suggest this hotel. The pool is gorgeous and a lovely temperature and there was always a waitress asking if we wanted drinks (most people didnt tip, but they didnt seem too concerned). The food was nice, a bit repetitive. Me and my boyfriend had a bit of a dodgy stomach the second week but we put that down to different surroundings. It wasnt serious and didnt impact upon our holiday at all. I would recommend the Jungle Tour - drive your own small speed boat and snorkel in the sea - although shop around as you can get better prices that the tour operators offer (we paid about $70 each through Thomas Cook but i later found out you could get it as low as $40 as many companies offer it). The Pirate Ship is definitely one to do as its a really good laugh, and easy to get drunk and have a dance.
We went for the day trip to Xel-ha. Its about an hour and half coach journey but its worth it as the lagoon is beautiful and the wildlife walking about is pretty funny too. We spent alot of our time in the Isla shopping centre which was just a bus ride away. It had some lovely restaurants - Jonny Rockets and the Thai were my favourite. ALso the cinema which showed English films and was only about £2.50 each! BEWARE - the airport may try to rip you off like they did with us!!!! Apparently we were 9kg over on our luggage and got charged $22 per kilo! Defo a con, loads of people got caught. So make sure you either keep your weight low, or take enough to pay the charge. The exit tax was $40 when we were leaving. Id recommend this hotel and Cancun to everyone as to me it was like a paradise!
