Comments & Reviews about El Quinto Sol Playa del Carmen:
Good hotel if you are busy taking in the scenery, not lounging at the hotel 24/7. If you want a resort, pay for a resort. If you want a nice, small hotel at the quieter end of Avenida 5, then Quinto Sol is a good choice. Try for the rooms on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th floor though... the ones on the bottom funnel every sound into the room (until 2am or so) and are difficult to keep at a good temp. The fourth floor rooms are very nice and you can open windows to keep the fresh air coming. There is A/C in every room, but in Feb the breeze is really nice!
The staff are non-intrusive, but helpful if you need them.
The hotel is lovely during the day and night and has lounging areas that make for nice resting spots.
It is a five minute walk to the beach and there are palapas for free that provide some shade.
Try eating at La Distilleria... the arracherra steak is awesome!

Big rooms, good location, smell of sewage emanating from toilet. What more can you ask for? I actually liked the place because the tree growing up through the atrium was cool, the staff was always nice but didn't bother me, and it had A/C. But I can see how some of the more finicky folks would complain about the toilet smell, the Best Western style of the rooms, and the construction noise in the morning.
When I say, you get exactly what you pay for, I mean it's worth the $40/night I paid when splitting the cost with two other buddies. If I was alone or picking up the tab for me and a babe, I might go for the next step up.
