We stayed in the Royal Service Gran Melia Hotel, September 5th-11th, and had a wonderful time. First let me give you some background about myself as a traveler. My husband and I tend to stay in Westin's and Hyatt's, though occasionally we splurge and stay at a Ritz or Four Seasons. I know good service when I see it, and believe that sometimes it's worth it. The service at this hotel was very good, not the best I've ever had, but certainly good. Most every time we passed a member of the staff, they asked us if there was anything we needed, but it wasn’t quite to the level where everyone on-site knew your name, or remembered your personal preferences for drinks etc. There’s nothing wrong with that, and as I said the service was very good, but if you are expecting top-notch level service of that caliber you will be disappointed.
I don't think I would bother staying here, if I weren’t going to stay in the separate Royal Service part of the hotel. The Royal Service area includes a separate pool area (private pool, snack bar, better palapalas with thicker padding and nicer views), a dedicated butler during your stay, private check-in, and a complimentary lounge with breakfast in the morning, snacks in the afternoon, and a small dessert and some wine/liquor in the evening. Breakfast was great, cereal, muffins/pastries, fresh fruit, bagels, juice and coffee were standard fare, with two hot items that rotated (spicy potatoes, pancakes, ham and cheese croissant). My only complaint was that there was no water available in the lounge in the morning. It was easy enough to ask our butler Leo to bring us a glass of water, but it would have been nice to have it available without asking.
The atrium of the hotel is not air-conditioned as other reviews have mentioned, but it was not a problem for my husband and I. Our room was well air-conditioned provided we left the system on. If the air-conditioning is turned off for about 10 minutes we found that the humidity increased substantially in the room, so we left it on for the entire time we were there.
Our room was well furnished, and was pretty standard as hotel rooms go. Bed was comfortable, bathroom was decently sized, balcony was nice but went mostly unused (we preferred hanging by the pool). There is no real night life at this hotel, but you can get that easily enough by going to the bar area in Cancun.
Most of the restaurants seemed to be closed since there were so few people at the hotel, but the main buffet one was open (it also had a la carte items). Food was good, and room service and the food by the pool were fine as well. My poolside hamburger was surprisingly good, and my husband really enjoyed the quesadillas.
I suggest going across the street to the Oxxo to stock up on water and snacks/sundries as it is much cheaper than at the hotel, and we went through a lot of bottled water during our trip.
My only real complaint regarding the hotel was the Vacation Concierge i.e. timeshare representatives in the main lobby of the regular hotel. Avoid them and you will be fine, but I hate that they are branded as Vacation Concierge, when all they are trying to do is to sell you a timeshare. There were no such people in the Royal Service section of the hotel, which was nice, but the whole thing just lowers the class of the hotel in my book.
All in all, the Royal Service Gran Melia was a great place to stay, and I’d definitely recommend it to others.
